Madurai - The City of Nectar

Madurai, one of the largest cities of Tamilnadu, has always been the center of attraction for tourists to south India. The city with rich historical legacy has plenty to keep its visitors engaged. However, the grand Meenakshi Sundereshwar Temple walks away with the major share of this attention.

With one of the largest temple complexes in India, the Madurai Meenakshi Temple has found references in ancient Tamil literature. The present structure, though, was built during 1623 to 1655 CE. The presiding deities of this temple is goddess Parvati, who is known as Meenakshi here. She is accompanied by her consort, Lord Shiva, known as Sundereshwar. The grandeur and the significance of the temple also helped it secure a comfortable entry into the top 30 nominees of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Other then the Meenakshi Temple, other tourist places to visit in Madurai includes Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam, Thirumalai Nayak Mahal, Koodal Azhagar Temple, The Gandhi Museum, Manalur, Annamalai and Nagamalai. Check out Madurai Tourism if you want to know more about these tourist places to visit in the city.
