Amarnath Yatra




Every year in the month of July-August, the holy land of Amarnath is resplendent with the enchanting sound of 'Bam Bam Bhole'. As this is the time of the annual Amarnath Yatra, one of the holiest Hindu pilgrimage center. Thousands of Hindu devotees from every corner of the world come to Amarnath Caves for the darshans of sacred ice Shiv Lingam and to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva. 

The Legend:
The origin of Amarnath Yatra is associated with a very famous myth, prevalent since the Vedic times. According to legends Amarnath cave is the place, that Lord Shiva choose to told Goddess Parvati about the secrets of immortality and creation of universe. No living being was allowed to hear this secret, even Lord Shiva left his own son Ganesha on the way. He also burnt all the living things near the caves, leaving behind a pigeon egg that was protected because of the Shiva assan. People believe that two pigeons came out of that egg, and listened the Amar katha and became immortal. It is also said that those pigeons are still alive and are living in the caves.
Discovery of the divine Amarnath Caves:
According to old stories there was a shepherd named Buta Malik who first discovered the sacred cave. The story goes like, one day a saint gave him a bag full of coals, which he later found out that they were turned into gold coins. He went back to thanks the saint but found no one, instead he accidentally discovered the Amarnath Cave and the Shiv Lingam. He later told this to the villagers and since than the Amarnath Yatra was started. 

The beginning of Yatra:
Every year the state government of Jammu and Kashmir organize this yatra on a grand level. The yatra is started from the Pahalgam from where the devotees go on their feet (as there is no means of transportaion available) to the caves. After they reach the caves, devotees participate in an aarti performed by the priest. A special puja is performed on the day of Raksha Bandhan, as its has a religious significance.

How to reach:
By air: Indian Airlines had daily flights to Delhi and Srinagar. 
By train: The Shalimar Express departs from Delhi at 4.10 pm and arrives in Jammu at 7 am.
